Preventative maintenance is always more cost-effective than repairs that could have been avoided. An annual sweeping and inspection is recommended by the National Fire Protection Association and is critical for chimneys used regularly. Even if used occasionally, a chimney system (the appliance or fieplace, any necessary connecting pipe and the chimney itself) interior and exterior should be routinely inspected and cleaned if necessary.
